Below is a list of news sources

  • GroundUp - Non-profit online news paper with a focus on local journalism
  • Moneyweb - Financial news source.
  • Daily Maverick - Features lots of commentary and analysis so be alert for that. Otherwise found to be reliable. Has been accused of anti-EFF bias by the EFF due to its coverage of corruption within the party. Quality of reporting by South African standards is high and is generally a highly regarded source.
  • Defence Web - Good source on African (specifically South African) defence related news.
  • Sunday Times - has published a number of notable exposes. They do sometimes get things wrong but do correct themselves when they do. Owned by Tiso Blackstar Group.
  • Business Day - generally good but features a lot of opinion pieces and does not always fact check. Owned by Tiso Blackstar Group.
  • Engineering News - Good source for information on technical subjects but does sometimes use unreliable news wire sources for some stories.
  • Mail and Guardian - generally relatively high quality but budget cuts have had a negative impact on quality. Tends to lean centre-left.
  • amaBhungane - Notable investigative journalism source.
  • Die Burger - Afrikaans language daily owned by Naspers.
  • Politicsweb - South African politics news aggregator similar to realclearpolitics.
